Mining firm, BCM Ghana has pledged to deepen its corporate social responsibility in schools and communities around Labone and its environs.
The pledges comes after the BCM Women in Mining Chapter organised a health talk on breast cancer awareness and screening at the Presbyterian Senior High School in Osu on Monday ( 14 October) as part of breast cancer awareness month.
Speaking to Ghextractives.com on the sidelines of the event on Monday (14 October), Constance Boateng, the Financial Secretary for BCM Women in Mining Chapter, explained that the initiative is part of a broader goal to engage with the community beyond health awareness.
“As part of our corporate social responsibility, BCM aims to reach out to our community in every necessary field, not just health.”
“This October being breast cancer awareness month, we thought it wise to organize this program to educate students on the risks of late detection and the importance of early detection,” she said.
Boateng added, “the goal is to provide ongoing support and possible discounts on further medical care for those in need.”
A medical Doctor with North Ridge Clinic, who also participated in the event, underscored the importance of regular breast self-examinations from a young age. “It’s never too early to start checking your breasts, even in secondary school,” she advised.
She highlighted the increased risk factors posed by modern diets and lifestyle choices, advocating for a proactive approach to health. Advising that women start regular ultrasound scans by age 32 and mammograms from age 40, in consultation with their physicians.
“These practices don’t just help with breast cancer but with other cancers too,” she noted.
WIM Ghana was present to support the breast cancer awareness and screening program which was organized by BCM Women in Mining.
